FINANCING HIGHER EDUCATION

The Federal Government

This is where you should start!  Once you have been accepted to an institution of higher learning, you may begin the search for scholarships.  The first thing that needs to be done by the family is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

You must complete the FAFSA to qualify for:

  • Federal and most state grants, scholarships, low-cost student loans, and work study programs.
  • Pennsylvania State Grant Program
  • Many school-based student aid programs

Completing the FAFSA is easier than you think.  And, it's free!

The fastest and easiest way to apply is to do so online.  The website is:  http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov

On the right hand side, click on the FAFSA Filing Option.  (Remember, you want the 2011-21 form.)

If you are unable to access an online form,  you may also call 1-800-433-3243 to have a form sent to you.

Check out this video about the cost of going to college. http://www.schooltube.com/video/53382/The-Thing-About-College

PLEASE NOTE:  It is impossible to post all available scholarships in this wiki!  Just remember...you should not have to pay a fee to get scholarship monies.  If you find yourself in such a site, simply get out of it!  Searching scholarships can be a full-time job!  In addition, some sites continually update their information and sites need to be re-visited from time to time.  Also, do not overlook the obvious:

Parents places of employment often offer scholarships to children of their employees.

          Local churches and Community organizations

          Credit Unions

Often these are not advertised and you or your parents must inquire about them.
